The Road to the BAFTAS

We’re really thrilled that a few of the projects we have worked on here at Fuse, have been nominated for BAFTA TV Craft and BAFTA Television Awards.

It’s been a busy year at Fuse Post so far. We’ve been diving headfirst into a wide range of children's TV projects and it’s always exciting when the work is recognised and nominated! Moments like this give us a chance to step back and reflect on the role we’ve played in shaping the sound and bringing these shows to life.

Boosnoo!, Horrible Science and The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball are all fantastic shows with great teams who we get to work closely with.

Boosnoo! is an innovative show that delights viewers with its subtlety, as we follow a red ball through abstract worlds. It proves that you don’t always need dialogue to tell a story or evoke emotion. Dubbing Mixer Simon Couzens, along with composer Sandy Nuttgens, have created a beautiful soundscape that guides the ball on its journey.

Simon comments “The show reminds me of programmes I loved as a child, with the ball rolling through different worlds feeling very analogue in nature, so it was important to use bespoke foley to create as many of the sounds as possible”.

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball is a beloved show that's been delighting audiences for years. It’s wacky and full of zany characters that always seem to end up in mind bending scenarios! The sound has to match the energy on screen, so it’s fast paced and snappy, often helping with the comedic aspects of the plot.

Dubbing Mixer James O’Brien said “Designing the sound for Gumball has been a privilege and a passion for us. The wild nature and magnitude of the series means flexibility and dexterity are needed by the team to accomplish the briefs given by the creative leads at Hanna Barbera.”

As Gumball is a multi dimensional world, the sound is vital in creating these unique spaces, whilst also seamlessly threading all these different worlds together. “These challenges, alongside our collaboration with the visionary creative team, are what makes the job so satisfying and enjoyable.”

Horrible Science, a spin off of the hugely successful Horrible Histories series, is a fun comedy sketch show that teaches the audience about the world of science. A mixture of live action and animation, it's a little different from our usual work. The sound, though, is still vital in emphasising the action on screen and finding the perfect balance between keeping it fun, realistic and educational.

Dubbing Mixer Scott Wilkinson said “Having worked on Horrible Histories over the years, being asked to help create the new world of Horrible Science was a fun and exciting challenge. Even some of the live action sketches have a cartoon-like sensibility to them, and the sound effects in particular help reinforce the experience.”

Whatever the outcome on awards night, it’s great to look back at our collaborations on these fantastic shows, and to be nominated amongst the other outstanding projects.
