Burbank, CA – June 24, 2026 – Remoto today announced an extensive update to Playback, its professional remote review platform for media teams of all sizes. The release includes Remoto Capture Agent, a new companion application that enables hosts to stream from remote machines while managing review sessions from a local computer. The new capability allows organizations to keep media on secure studio workstations while maintaining the flexibility to launch and control review sessions remotely.
Remoto Capture Agent runs as a macOS system tray application and can be installed by authorized machine room technicians or rental houses before editorial systems are deployed. During session setup, organizers select the desired Agent and authenticate access through Playback, enabling remote control of streaming without requiring direct access to the workstation hosting the media.
The new Playback release also supports Windows PCs, bringing the platform’s frame-accurate streaming and live conferencing capabilities to teams working across mixed operating system environments. In addition, Playback version 1.9 adds compatibility with Apple’s Tahoe operating system.
“Remoto continues to prioritize flexible workflows that empower both independent creators and media companies navigating today’s evolving production landscape,” states Greg Stone, CEO of Remoto. “Every update is backed by uncompromising security and purchasing options designed to support different production sizes and usage patterns, because we believe critical review technology should be adaptable to all content organizations.”
Unlike review and approval platforms built around rigid subscriptions or enterprise contracts, Playback offers multiple options that accommodate everyone from freelance editors to post houses to major studios. Users can purchase single on-demand sessions or pre-paid time bundles with a credit card. Companies can customize usage-based billing plans that handle concurrent sessions across multiple hosts, or deploy fixed-priced unlimited rooms for predictable budgeting.
High-Quality Experience for Every Participant
Playback is designed for a wide range of use cases, which means participants may join from a range of devices. Stakeholders can participate via iOS or a native Apple TV app for a lean-back, big-screen experience. A newly developed infrastructure (Remoto Streaming Service) ensures that all participants receive a consistent, high-quality experience. Native app users are served full-quality SRT streams, and browser users are served optimized WebRTC streams. Multichannel audio (5.1, 7.1, 16-channel) is supported via the Opus codec for discrete routing, local decoding, and stereo fold-down as necessary.
Simplified User Experience
Setting up recurring Playback sessions is now faster. A new “Reuse” button on the dashboard lets organizers clone settings and guest lists from any previous session with a single click.
The User Profile has also been redesigned, making it easier and faster to manage individual details, security settings, and team account access.
Robust Collaboration
As more productions choose Remoto for their remote session needs, the company continually adds new interactive features to address different project stages. The new version of Playback enables any participant to share related project content in addition to the main stream. This is particularly useful during early creative development, when directors and cinematographers may want to share visual references, inspiration, or research while establishing the style and tone of a project with editors, mixers, and colorists.
Future Developments
Looking ahead to future releases, Remoto is developing advanced enterprise security capabilities and expanded support for HDR workflows. These features are expected to be released before the end of summer.
Reflecting on the crowded marketplace of remote review solutions, Greg Stone remarks “Productions have spent years choosing between bespoke solutions that are difficult to scale, consumer tools that compromise critical reviews, asynchronous platforms that miss real-time reactions, and expensive contract-based systems. Playback is the only offering that provides a consistent, high-quality experience that is adaptable to client approvals and internal sessions, no matter the length, scope, or budget of the project.”
1) Fixed-priced billing for rooms with unlimited use is expected to be available July 2026.
2) Web browsers do not support 16-channel audio. All guests of a mix session greater than 7.1 surround must participate via native Playback applications.
