Post Production on Netflix's New Harrowing True Story Doc, Surviving Black Hawk Down

Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning 2001 war film about the shooting down of two US military helicopters was inspired by the real-life Battle of Mogadishu. A new Netflix docuseries explores the true story behind the movie and here we delve into how it was working on the Post Production at halo.

Surviving Black Hawk Down tells the gripping real story of the horror and heroism behind the events that inspired Ridley Scott’s blockbuster movie Black Hawk Down. This documentary blends raw, immersive storytelling with first-person interviews from both sides of The Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. This extraordinary series for Netflix showcases post production at its very best.

Halo provided full Picture and Sound Post Production.

Series Director: Jack MacInnes said “Our aim with this series was to immerse the viewers in the visceral reality of modern urban warfare and to present a filmic experience which would live up to the veterans’ testimony and rival Ridley Scott’s movie. We needed an immersive soundscape, a striking cinematic colour grade and VFX that blended seamlessly with the action. Halo’s passionate and dedicated team pulled out all the stops to achieve this and we were delighted with the results.”

Line Producer: Clare Keeley said “It was fantastic to work with Halo on this series and we were lucky to be supported throughout by Sabrina & Matt. The series is really fantastic and that comes down to the love and creativity the whole team poured into this project. From Ed bringing the battle scenes to life, Tom doing wonders in the online, Duncan’s stunning grade and Gerrit’s magic with the sound design – it was pleasure to work with the Halo team.”

Executive Producers: Dominic Crossley-Holland & Tom Pearson
Producers: Jamal Osman & Emma Supple

Online Editor & Flame Artist: Tom Young said “Surviving Black Hawk Down was an absolute blast to work on (and with the 400+ muzzle flashes we added, I do mean that quite literally!) From battlefield smoke and explosions to glitching text and turning a single Black Hawk helicopter into a whole fleet of them, I got to use every toy in the box for this one and thoroughly loved every moment of it – I think the final product really speaks for itself, the whole team did an amazing job to bring this to life and it was just a real privilege to work on.”
