Inside Creative Outpost: A Q&A and Studio Tour with Danny Etherington

We visited Creative Outpost in Soho, opposite Soho Square, to sit down with co-founder Danny and learn more about the studio’s 12-year journey. Founded by Danny and Q, Creative Outpost is a Soho picture and audio post-production facility specialising in commercial and episodic content, including ADR. In our Q&A and exclusive tour, Danny takes us behind the scenes to explore the space, the team, the beautiful interiors, the private courtyard designed for maximum privacy and seclusion, and the full post workflow delivered under one roof.

For anyone new to Creative Outpost, who are you and what do you do?

Creative Outpost is an independent, scalable boutique post production studio. We provide all services onsite, or internationally for our remote clients. We are Disney/Marvel/Amazon/Netflix security cleared.

Tell us the story of how Creative Outpost came to be.

12 years ago, myself and co-owner Q were 2D ops. Myself in a London facility, and Q was in Stockholm Sweden servicing post for DDB Stockholm. Simultaneously we had the opportunity to leave those jobs and start a company together with our clients' trust and willingness to back us with their future projects.

What services do you offer?

We offer all post services and beyond. Shoot supervision, offline, colour grading, Online/VFX, CG/AI augmentation, Sound Design/Mix, V/O record (and casting), ADR, 5.1 & Atmos mixing, Music Composition and Music Clearance. This is for both advertising and Episodic/Film clients alike.

Tell us about the space you have here and what it’s capable of…

During Covid, we built our current facility. Across 4 floors we’ve realised a beautiful, creative space in a mid century style, but with a twist in places. Our Atmos studio is furnished in a sumptuous blue velvet and our reception has the Hix Hexagon carpet from the Shining. This inadvertently has now become part of our identity too, which is a happy accident.

What are the biggest strengths of Creative Outpost as a company?

The biggest strength is the team, but it’s the complete service package that truly makes us more unique. So the fact that a time-stretched PPS or Producer only has to make one phone call to shift a schedule slightly, or make a change that affects grade, VFX and audio. Creatives can bounce around from room to room. This also massively helps push the budget further. But my favourite strength is water cooler moments when audio engineers, may be speaking to VFX for example, discussing the project and elevating it with ideas, or ways of streamlining.

Where can people find Creative Outpost?

We can be found just across Oxford Street from Soho Square. We’re in a private, secluded courtyard, a calm oasis in the madness of the West End which works well with any ‘high profile’ actors that may attend with regards to their privacy. A car can drive into the yard, up to the door and wait outside (and there’s no extortionate West End parking charges!).
