Chloe's Letter to the Community

Nov 4 / Chloe Dean
During the lockdown days of COVID, when our industry felt frozen, I began hosting a Monday Motivation call for women in the creative fields. It was just a small space to help us feel less alone. That’s how I met Jess at Post Super. We connected over those calls, and just recently, she asked me: If you had access to a larger platform to share one message, what would it be?

Here it is! TV is not dead, and you are not alone.

I’ve been in television for two decades. I’ve seen the ups and downs, the feasts and famines, the moments of uncertainty that felt like the end of everything. I remember the shift from analog to digital, from HD to 4K and HDR, and the unease that came with each leap. I remember the 2008 financial crash and how it felt like we were all holding our breath. Each time, we adapted. We found new tools, new ways of telling stories, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Storytelling has been with us since the dawn of time, from parent to child, from one generation to the next. We’ve passed down stories that outlive us. We are all storytellers whether you’re a runner, a production accountant, or an actor each one of us a small cog in a big, beautiful wheel.

Storytelling isn’t dead, it’s simply evolving.

Yes, there is fear and heartache and the very real uncertainty we’re all living in. Some of us are on the brink of losing our homes or livelihoods. Some of us have swapped our director’s cap for a barista’s apron. Some of us are scrambling for scraps or trying to diversify in ways we never imagined.

To my fellow post-supervisors. I know this is often a lonely job. We’re the lone wolves of the industry, and the buck stops with us. But I want you to hear this: you are not alone. We are in this together, and we will find our way through.

I know it’s hard to connect right now. Those with jobs may hesitate to reach out, afraid of causing pain. Those without may feel they can’t talk to anyone working. But we need each other more than ever. My heartfelt wish is that we hold each other up wherever we are, whatever stage we’re in.

This isn’t about pretending things are fine. It’s about remembering who we are when things aren’t.

So, what do we do now? Maybe you’re thinking, “I’m about to lose everything. I don’t have a job. I don’t have hope.” Remember that it’s always darkest before dawn.

This is a time to channel that fear and uncertainty into something that feeds your mind with possibility. There are free trainings out there, resources to help you prepare for the next evolution. Reach out to places like Post Super and Screen Skills to see what’s available and most importantly, check in on each other.

One thing all of us in TV have in common is resilience and a brilliant sense of humour.

Let’s use that now, and let’s find a way of being there for each other.

We will get through this together.

Big Love Chloe X
