Vaudeville’s foley work for BBC’s Shakespeare – Rise Of A Genius & Netflix’s Mysteries of the Faith , along with immersive projects including the recently announced mixed reality (MR) game ‘Starship Home’ and the virtual reality (VR) game ‘Fight Flight.’ In addition to the reality modeled sound design, Vaudeville’s foley department also delivered the true-to-life 3D foley for the creative launch of the Alliance for Open Media’s Immersive Audio Models and Formats (IAMF) specification with Google and Samsung at CES 2024.

Foley, the art of sound effects creation, plays a crucial role in both traditional and immersive audio environments. By carefully recording everyday sounds—like footsteps, door creaks, or fabric rustling—Foley artists add a layer of authenticity and detail that significantly enhances the listener’s engagement and immersion. In film and television, these sounds support the visual content, grounding fantastical scenes in real-world auditory experiences. In immersive audio environments such as virtual reality or 3D audio experiences, Foley helps to create a lifelike three-dimensional soundscape that envelops the listener in the story, making the virtual world feel more tangible and lifelike. This meticulous craft not only enriches the narrative by adding depth and texture to the audio, but also triggers a stronger emotional response from the audience, connecting them more deeply to the story being told.

“We are thrilled to unveil our new Foley department, marking a significant milestone in our journey to offer ambitious, bespoke sound design for our customers & collaborators,” said Luke Hatfield, Group Head of Sound at Vaudeville Sound. “With the introduction of this cutting-edge Foley stage and our highly skilled Foley team, we are excited to bring a new level of realism and creativity to our projects in across our slate from linear content, interactive and immersive applications.”

Vaudeville built the world’s largest immersive audio library, for Shutterstock, in 2023, which encompasses more than 60,000 sound files, and leaned extensively on its foley department.

“Foley is an essential element in immersive audio, enhancing the perceptual characteristics of in-scene action, and directing the listener in a more naturalistic manner. Our new department has already pioneered new resonance and reflection capture techniques for Foley in immersive applications and continues to help us push the boundaries of realism and immersive storytelling,” said Mirko Vogel, managing partner and head of the immersive audio division for Vaudeville.
